Great Escapes: Art Galleries

Check out these art hubs for local work.

In a city like this, there’s no reason to wait until First Friday to escape with some amazing local art. Chestnut Hill has a slew of galleries that offer a wide collection art, from the fine to the functional, the beautiful and the bizarre, and everything in between. Though a couple of these are by appointment only, others keep regular hours for your browsing needs. Whether you are looking for a neat gift or some art for a new home or apartment, don’t look further than your own backyard.

1.      Nichols Berg Gallery
Location: 8611 Germantown Avenue
Hours: Wednesday 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.

                  Thursday-Saturday 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.

The Nichols Berg Gallery hosts a variety of artists, many of which hail from the Philadelphia area. There is space for all sorts of innovative and interesting art, and the studio offers workshops in all sorts of art forms, from printmaking to drawing. If you’re looking for a place to check out some small installations and see some fascinating artwork, take a walk down the street and check out this gallery.

2.      The Chestnut Hill Gallery and Frame Shoppe

Tuesday through Friday,  10 a.m. – 6 p.m.
            Saturday, 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.
            Sunday,  Noon – 3 p.m.

            The Chestnut Hill Gallery and Frame Shoppe is a framing center that doubles as an expansive art gallery, hosting over 40 artists. This gallery hosts rotating exhibits within its two galleries. The Main Gallery showcases four artists at a time for two months, while the back gallery hosts a number of in-house works. The space also offers custom framing and restoration services.

 

3.      The Carol Schwartz Gallery
Location: 101 Bethlehem Pike
Hours: Tuesdays through Saturdays, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.

This gallery, which has been growing for the past 25 years, showcases a number of artwork, from vintage posters to handcrafted jewelry to Judaica and other photography and paintings. On April 1 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. the gallery will be hosting a cheese and wine reception while it displays in wide array of classic poster art.

 

4.       Artista

Artista pops up regularly on Patch because of its numerous events, fundraisers and exhibits. This gallery was created in 2007 by three local women who wanted a place to sell their artwork, and Artista has flourished ever since. From handmade clothing and accessories and jewelry to handmade photo albums and other cool decorative and functional art, Artista has what anyone could be looking for.

5.      Jean-Jacques Gallery

            Wednesday through Friday: 11 a.m. – 7 p.m.

Jean-Jacques Gallery Salon and Boutique is the perfect place to splurge on some nice art and gifts for yourself or for someone you care about. From sustainable accessories to hip knickknacks and presents to contemporary art from a number of local names, this gallery has a pretty wide variety of art for you and yours. And this gallery regularly hosts First Friday events that feature presentations by the artists on display.
