Great Escape: Cinco de Mayo

Check out these local spots to celebrate the holiday.

No matter what your background, Cinco de Mayo has become a cause for celebration. This holiday, which celebrates the victory of Mexican militia over the French in the landmark Battle of Puebla in 1862, has spread from a regional holiday to a truly international day of festivities. And Philly has no shortage of locations to commemorate this historic day, especially right in our area.

  1. Adobe Café – This delicious southwestern restaurant, which touts the feel of a Mexican cantina and a huge array of vegetarian meal options, will step up its game for Cinco de Mayo this year. Besides its long list of traditional meals, the restaurant will be serving a number of festive fusion entrees, including Penne Puebla.

  2. Avenida – Spend a classy Cinco de Mayo at Avenida this week. This Latin American restaurant boasts a varied and tasty menu, with everything from homemade tortillas to great outdoor seating. Celebrate the holiday here with $5 quesadillas, margaritas, sangrias, calamari and mole ribs specials. Your taste buds will thank you, and your friends will appreciate the high class fiesta.

  3. The Cactus Restaurant and Bar – This festive, casual Tex-Mex Bar will also be getting in the spirit come Thursday with a full menu, $2.50 Corona and $5 Cuervo margarita specials. Cactus also has a number of regular Thursday drink specials on Blur Moon and Stoli drinks and Quizzo every week at 9p.m. with half price appetizers.

  4. Mad River Manayunk – Mad River will once again host its renowned Cinco De Mayo party, with live music, great drink specials and its typical party feel. Come see Go Go Gadjet perform with DJ Daily between sets, take advantage of the all-day drink specials on $3 Coronos and Cuervo Silver Margaritas until midnight. And how could you say no to a free taco bar from 6-8p.m.?

  5. – Mi Puebla Restaurante, right on Germantown Avenue, is another perfect place to celebrate Cinco de Mayo. With great traditional southwestern foods and a huge array of bakery items, there is something for everyone here. And with its family friendly atmosphere, it’s a perfect place to have a celebratory meal without that over-festive bar vibe.
