A Snowy Wednesday Commute for Chestnut Hill

Snowfall begins in Chestnut Hill.

Update 5:33 p.m.: Snow is still not accumulating on streets and sidewalks, but the trolley tracks on Germantown are a bit slick. Traffic is moving slow on Germantown at Bethlehem Pike both ways, and heading into Mt. Airy at Cresheim Valley Drive. Stenton Avenue is clear.

The light snow doesn't seem to have Hillers running out for supplies. Pathmark and CVS were not showing any signs of a rush.

Snow began falling Wednesday after 2:30 p.m. in Chestnut Hill, just in time for the rush hour commute.

Already, I-76 is experiencing delays westbound, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation. The worst local area seems to be between the Lincoln Drive and Green Lane exists in Manayunk. SEPTA is reporting no service delays.

Though the current flurries aren't sticking much to the roads, the city is preparing for the potentially slippery ride home.

According to the Streets Department, city crews have treated roadways with a brine solution to prevent icing. These same crews will start salting roadways and will adjust for the evening based on the amount of snow and ice.

The city warned people to be careful while driving—especially on bridges and overpasses.

“We are asking motorists traveling home to allow extra time and maintain safe driving distances,” Streets Commissioner Clarena Tolson said.

Some tips the city gave, included:

  • Avoid sudden stops and starts.
  • Use low beams during heavy or blowing snow.
  • Ensure your lights, heater and defroster are working properly.
  • Consider using dedicated snow tires or tires mud and snow rated.
