Chestnut Hill Faces Flooding Thursday

Parts of Germantown Avenue are closed to drivers.

Chestnut Hill residents woke up Thursday morning to an unwelcome surprise: flooding, and lots of it.

SEPTA suspended service on the Chestnut Hill West Line until further notice. Thursday afternoon, SEPTA announced that the service would resume sometime Friday.

In the morning, Tweets and Facebook posts from residents were coming in as heavily as the rain as commuters found difficulty getting out of the neighborhood.

“After an hour in the car, I've discovered that I now live on an island. Maybe I should buy a boat,” said Birgit Heimann, of East Gravers Lane, on Facebook.

A student at Chestnut Hill College tweeted that he and other students were stuck in their dorms due to flooding. The college cancelled all day and evening classes for Thursday due to the flooding.

Germantown Avenue was shut down for the day after Bells Mill Road, which was also closed due to flooding, making it difficult to get out of Chestnut Hill.

School buses throughout Philadelphia were delayed Thursday morning due to the flooding. Parents and guardians were asked to assist with making sure that students are aware of the delays and that they are looked after.
