Weavers Way Discount Week Runs Through Saturday

A five percent member discount has been available at all stores since Jan. 15.

Running  through Jan. 21, Weavers Way Co-op will be thanking members at all their stores—including —with an additional five percent discount on all purchases. This translates to a ten percent discount for the Co-op’s "working" members.

Weavers Way communications director Jon McGoran said the week of discounts, which the consumer food co-op offers at least annually, is not just a show of appreciation for their 5,000 member households, but a way to attract more.

"It gives us a chance to reemphasize the benefits of membership," said McGoran. "We wanted to shine a bit of a spotlight on them."

According to McGoran, these benefits include discounts on services, the ability to place special orders, purchase bulk amounts of product, and get home delivery.

Weavers Way’s member/owners also have eligibility for a member loan program and access to a popular lending program through the police and fire credit union—so popular, McGoran said, that when a blogger wrote about the union’s CD rates a few years ago and mentioned Weavers Way membership as a way to get in, membership surged—vote for board members, and receive patronage rebates when the co-op turns a profit.

The rebate is often substantial. In 2008, McGoran said, Weavers’ 2,500-odd members received a total of $190,000 in rebates after getting $100,000 in both 2006 and 2007.

The director also emphasized the more intangible benefits of membership.

"It’s about supporting an organization that supports things that you agree with, and investing in a business in your community. When you become a member, you are an owner. A lot of the money stays local."

McGoran said the cop-op also hopes to attract more "working" members—households who, at a cost of six volunteer hours per year, receive a five percent discount year-round at Weavers Way.

McGoran said "working" members can log their hours performing a multitude of tasks, though most work on the retail end. 40 percent of members currently fall into this designation, a number McGoran hopes to see grow.

"Working membership really brings home to members that they own Weavers Way. That this is theirs."
