Hideaway Music to Celebrate Record Store Day

Hideaway Music's Brian Reisman is gearing up to bring Record Store Day to Chestnut Hill for a fifth consecutive year.

On Saturday, April 16, Brian Reisman will be opening s doors in celebration of National Record Store day.

First observed in 2007, the event started as a grassroots movement in support of independent record stores.  It has grown over the years and is now celebrated on the third Saturday in April every year by more than 700 stores across the country.  Several hundred stores outside of the U.S. participate as well.

It’s a day for fans to congregate at their favorite record shop, listen to some good music, fraternize with fellow audiophiles and maybe even score some exclusive releases.

Hundreds of musicians participate in the event, releasing unique albums and singles - a lot of the music people can pick up on Record Store Day is extremely rare.  In essence, this may be your only chance ever to get ahold of it.

“Some of these [records], they’re very limited,” said Reisman.  “And when I say limited, I mean they might put out 2000 across the whole country.  It can be anything from reissues to new stuff by contemporary artists.”

The masterminds behind Record Store Day have turned it into something of a scavenger hunt as well.  Not every record store will have access to all the releases.  In fact, for the most part, each store is more or less in the dark about what they’ll be getting in until right before the festivities begin.

“They probably won’t ship them until Wednesday,” said Reisman.  “It’s pretty cool – you’ve got people calling from all over the city looking for one specific thing.”

Limited releases from past and present artists such as Pink Floyd, Nirvana, The Decemberists, and Death Cab For Cutie number among the many that could potentially be available at Hideaway.

Hideaway has participated in Record Store Day before but this year Reisman is pulling out all the stops.

“We’ve done it in the past,” said Reisman.  “But never quite as big as this.  It [record store day] has really grown over the years.”

Reisman has booked local, 60’s pop-inspired indie band, When I Was 12, to play at Hideaway throughout the afternoon.  He’s also planning to discount some of the vinyl in stock.  And, those in attendance can also expect to take home their fair share of free swag.

“We’ve got a lot of promotional things that we’re going to be giving away for free,” said Reisman.  “CD samplers, tote bags, pins, some very cool stuff.”

After When I Was 12 finishes their set, The Junkbox Jukebox will be spinning records from, as Reisman put it, “an amazing collection of LPs”, until the close of business.

Hideaway Music’s celebration of Record Store Day will last all day long, from 10 AM to 6 PM, on April 16.
