Frozen Yogurt Hits the Hill This Summer

A new frozen yogurt shop is coming to East Highland Avenue.

Frozen yogurt, anyone?

This summer, Chestnut Hill residents will be able to answer ‘yes’ to that question without hopping in the car and driving to another section of the city.

Chill on the Hill Frozen Yogurt will be opening “probably in July,” said co-owner Leslie Newbold, a Chestnut Hill native. The shop recently signed a lease at 5 E. Highland Avenue (the space that is leaving).

“My partner [Alison Shoemaker] has had the idea for three years. Her daughter loves frozen yogurt and she was always driving out to Wayne or over to Manayunk for it,” Newbold said.

Like other pay-as-you-weigh frozen yogurt shops, Chill will be serving nearly thirty flavors of frozen yogurt, at 49 cents per ounce. There will be healthy toppings like fruit, add-ins like antioxidants, and traditional toppings like cookies, candy and fudge sauce, to name a few.

But to differ from other such shops, Newbold said she wants Chill to be a great spot to hang out. Nebold and Shoemaker are currently working on the interior design with Ann Kelly Interiors.

“There will be videos playing, maybe movies on the back wall, and we’ll have a lot of events, some to support local charities,” Newbold said.

Local and sustainable are two of the key elements of Chill. Newbold said as many toppings and ingredients as they can get locally, they will, to support local business. And all of the paper goods will be biodegradable, as will the water bottles sold at Chill.

“We’re open for ideas, any new ideas, we want to make it a little different than your average self-serve frozen yogurt,” Newbold said.
