Cheap Trips: Camping, Plant Life and Oz

Want to get out of town and go for a trip, but looking to save money?

Try one of these three trips you can enjoy on just one tank of gas: Fort Washington State Park in Whitemarsh, the Reading Arboretum in Reading and the St. Francis Players in Springfield.

About: Located in the Fort Washington section of Whitemarsh Township, Fort Washington State Park offers an opening to nature for both the causal and more serious outdoorsman. The park offers softball fields, bird watching, fishing, 3.5 miles of hiking trails, dog walking areas and a disc colg course. The park is also home to a number of picnic areas as well as an organized group tent area for campers.

About: Spring is prime time to explore the 25 landscaped acres of the Reading Arboretum. The garden features 65 specimens of trees, shrubs and flowering plants gathered from all over the world. Winding pathways lead visitors through the arboretum and footbridges crisscross scenic Wyomissing Creek, making this one of the most popular destinations in Berks County. The arboretum's Spring Plant Sale will be held rain or shine from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on April 21. The event will feature plants and books for sale and live music. Master gardeners will be on hand to answer questions.

22 miles or 36 minutes
Admission: $15 for reserved seats and $10 for general admission. $25 for opening night.

  • Dinner Theatre, Friday, April 20, 6 p.m.
  • Evening Performances, Saturday, April 21, Friday, April 27, Saturday, April 28, 8 p.m.
  • Matinee Performances, Sunday April 22 and April 29, 2 p.m.

Summary: The St. Francis Players, which provides parish and community members the chance to participate in musical and theater arts productions, will be staging the popular “The Wizard of Oz” in April. Follow Dorothy and her friends and they make their quest to meet the Wizard. Tickets for the opening night include an open bar and dinner.
