Grab and Go Kids Planner: Celebrate Japan, Spring Cleanup, Fool's Run, Basketball

Here is this week's installment of our , which documents upcoming family- and kid-friendly activities in the Northwest.

Japanese Cherry Blossom Festival
Where/When: Morris Arboretum, 100 E. Northwestern Ave., on Saturday from
11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Events include origami for kids from 11am-noon, Hoh Daiko
Drummers at 1pm and 1:30pm, and Japanese Garden Elements Tour from
2-3:30pm.
Why Go: Discover how an ordinary piece of paper can be transformed
into the extraordinary at Origami for Kids. Talk to paper puppets,
catch a leaping frog or model an emperor’s crown. This visually
exciting program weaves together storytelling, music and art done by
Origami Master and award winning author Barbara Pearl. Listen to
traditional and original music, and find out how Japanese gardens have
influenced Arboretum offerings.
Pricing: Member, PennCard holders and children under 3 are free, $16 adults, $14 seniors, $7 youth 3-17, students, active military, and those arriving on foot, by bike, or via SEPTA.

4th Annual Philly Spring Cleanup
Where/When: East Sedgwick Ave. and East Phil-Elena St. near Germantown
Ave., Saturday from 9am-2pm. Meet at 9am at Mt. Airy Playground,
Germantown and Sedgwick.
Why Go: Help make Mt. Airy shine for spring!

Mt. Airy Basketball Signup
Where/When: Mt Airy Playground, Germantown and Sedgwick St.,
Wednesday and Friday from 5-8pm.
Why Go: Boys and girls 15 and under can get registered to play in the
Mt. Airy Playground Community Basketball League, which operates
Mon-Thurs and Sat mornings.

Manayunk 5K Fools Run and Fun One-Mile Walk
Where/When: The Towpath entrance at the bottom of Leverington Ave &
Main St (Race Start), on Friday at 6:30pm
Why Go: Get some exercise and have some fun doing it. 5K run follows
the towpath along the Schuylkill running towards Conshohocken.
One-mile fun walk starting at the same time as the run, going in the
opposite direction to Kildare’s Brew Pub & back. Awards will be given
to the top three overall male & female finishers. Age group awards
will be give to top three finishers in each age group. There will
also be an award for the best "Foolish race attire"! Foolish outfits
strongly encouraged!
Pricing: $25 race registration; $15 walk. Parkway Corporation Parking
at Green Lane & Main Street is offering parking for $7 for the
evening. Proof of race participation will be required for parking
discount (either copy of race registration or race flyer)

Japanese Culture Week
Where/When: Liberty Place Rotunda, 16th & Chestnut; every weekday this
week from noon – 2pm. Events include: Monday – Learn origami, Tuesday
– calligraphy, Wednesday – kimono dressing, Thursday – ikebana, and
Friday -- martial arts demonstration.
Why Go: Observe and learn about five different aspects of Japanese
culture. A special display highlighting the 25th Anniversary of the
Philadelphia - Kobe Sister City relationship will be present
throughout.
