New Rec Center Breaks Ground Friday

Pleasant Playground's long-awaited upgrade is happening in East Mt. Airy.

Pleasant Playground is finally about to get its upgrade.

According to a release from councilwoman Cindy Bass, the Pleasant Playground Recreation Center is scheduled to break ground this Friday.

The $2.8 million rec center is part of an ongoing renovation of Pleasant Playground that has been going on since 2011.

"Pleasant Playground is a playground that for years has been trying to expand," Eman board member Derek Green told Patch in 2011.

The new recreation center will replace the existing structure and will include two activity rooms, a multipurpose room, staff kitchen, restrooms, and office. Sustainable building design incorporated into the new recreation center include, a green vegetated roof and energy efficient HVAC systems.

In addition to the updated rec center, a new playground is also going in.

The groundbreaking is schedule for Friday, 4 p.m. at Boyer and East Solcum Streets. Bass, along with State Reps LeAnna Washington and Cherelle Parker, are expected to be on hand for the ceremonial beginning of construction.
