New Chestnut Hill Friends Quaker Meetinghouse Campaign to Launch Wednesday

The meeting house will be located at 100 East Mermaid Lane.

Advisors and donors for the future Quaker meetinghouse for , to be located at 100 East Mermaid Lane, will be meeting Wednesday evening to announce fundraising goals and plans for the project.

Among one of the plans is the incorporation of a Skyspace by contemporary artist James Turrell. Turrell combines art and science to create his Skyspaces, using chambers with an aperture in the ceiling which focuses visitors on the sky. His Skyspaces have been commissioned around the globe, including by The Museum of Modern Art in New York, The Yorkshire Sculpture Park in England, The Israel Museum in Jerusalem; and most recently the National Gallery of Australia

Chestnut Hill Friends also plans to "turn an asphalt-covered former quarry into a public garden and provide greater access to a currently little-used section of Fairmount Park," according to a press release.

"This will bring visitors to this city, which is increasingly known for its art and vibrant arts scene. To have an installation by an artist of Turrell's stature in Philadelphia will further bolster this city's reputation as one of this nation's great art venues," said Gail Harrity, president of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, in a press release.
