Neighbors Get to Work at Allens Lane Station

Members of the Friends of the Allens Lane Train Station and the West Mt. Airy Neighbors Streetscape Committee put down mulch.

Friends of Allen Lane Station and WMAN Streetscapes Committee members met Saturday morning, September 28th to spread wood chip mulch beneath the station’s signature pin oak. The tree has been under stress from recent construction activity.

The group has been tending the tree under the supervision of Hal Rosner, Arborist with Shechtman Tree Care LLC. Shechtman donated and delivered the mulch. Botanist/Horticulturist Kevin Stutler prepared and applied compost tea to increase beneficial microbial activity.

The mulch will add much needed organic matter to the tree’s root zone, conserve moisture, suppress weeds and cushion the effects of foot traffic, reducing soil compaction.

Those who donated brawn and expertise were: Carol Graeber, Carol Davis, Dick Kessler, Doris Kessler, Hal Rosner, Bob Simon, Kevin Stutler, and Dave Tukey.
