How Walkable is Chestnut Hill?
Walkscore.com rates cities and neighborhoods by how walkable they are.
In a rating of metropolitan areas across the United States, a website that looks out for pedestrians rated Philadelphia favorably. But how did Chestnut Hill fare using the same standards?
WalkScore.com evaluated 50 cities nationwide for a variety of standards desirable for transporting without cars—including walkability, public transportation and accessibility of apartments to those feature.
Philadelphia ranked as number five, with a walkability scale of 74 out of 100—making it very walkable. Only New York, San Francisco, Boston and Chicago, respectively, placed higher.

Because the city as a whole scored well, a majority of its neighborhoods ranked high. WalkScore said 72 percent of Philadelphians live in areas that have a walkability scale of 70 or higher—once again, pretty good.
Chestnut Hill placed just below the city average. With more rural areas and a business district along Germantown Avenue, the neighborhood varies in its offerings.

Chestnut Hill came in 44th with a 70 percent score.
Center City East/West and University City claimed the top three places, with scores of 97 and 93, respectively.
Locally, West Mt. Airy came in 45th with a 70 percent score—nearly identical to Chestnut Hill. East Mt. Airy placed 51st with a 59 percent score. Manayunk came in 17th with a score of 81, and Roxborough was 60th with a score of 62.
