Friday Night Jazz: Jazz Plugged In

  • When: Friday, Feb. 15 at 6 p.m.
  • Where: Woodmere Art Museum 9201 Germantown Ave, Philadelphia
  • Why Go: Jazz goes electric. Experience the music of Miles Davis, Jimi Hendrix, John McLaughlin, Chick Corea, and other explorers of the “snap, crackle, and pop!” of electrified jazz. Featuring guitarist Frank Butrey of the Arpeggio Jazz Ensemble.
  • Cost: $20 ($10 for members, free under 12)

Free Community Meal

  • When: Saturday, Feb. 16 at 11 a.m.
  • Where: St. Michael's Evangelical Lutheran Church 6671 Germantown Ave, Philadelphia
  • Why Go:  St. Michael's hosts a free community meal each week on Saturdays. It consists of hot food, casseroles, a drink, fruit and homemade cookies.  Donations are welcome, and the church is also always looking for volunteers to help out with the meal.

Family Fun Workshops: Fairy Tales and Magic

  • When: Saturday, Feb. 16 at 12:30 p.m.
  • Where: Woodmere Art Museum 9201 Germantown Ave, Philadelphia
  • Why Go: Come out and read and make art inspired by some of our favorite fairy tales. Each Saturday is a new fun activity for the whole family. A parent must accompany children. Perfect for budding artists and their families, ages 4–10. Advanced registration suggested.  This week: Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland
  • Cost: $10 ($5 members)

'Witchhazel' Is Your Favorite?

  • When: Sunday, Feb. 17 from 1 - 3 p.m.
  • Where: Morris Arboretum, 100 East Northwestern Avenue
  • Why Go: Grab your family and head over to the Arboretum for a day of fun and exploration. Follow the scavenger hunt to discover the many varieties of witchhazels growing at the Arboretum. Ranging in color from yellow and orange to pink and red, witchhazels are some of the first harbingers of spring. Compare their beautiful flowers and take in their heady scent. After your hunt, stop back at the Visitor Center and make a fun craft.

Bullfighter's Prayers and Love Ballads: The Dali String Quartet

  • When: Sunday, Feb. 17 at 3 p.m.
  • Where: Woodmere Art Museum 9201 Germantown Ave, Philadelphia
  • Why Go: This classically trained quartet offers a program rich with traditional Latin American songs, tangos, and string quartet compositions of the 19th and 20th centuries. Works by composers Efrain Amaya, Heitor Villa-Lob, Luiz Bonfa, Joaquin Turina, Carlos Gardel, Carols Almaran, and Abelardito Valde will be performed.
  • Cost: $20 ($10 members)

Maple Sugaring for Tots

  • When: Friday, Feb. 15 at 10 a.m.
  • Where:Wissahickon Environmental Center
  • Why Go: Spend the morning with your young child discovering how maple syrup is made. Taste the fresh sap as it drips from the tree, and warm up near a fire as the sap is boiled into maple syrup. Top off the day by enjoying our home-made syrup on pancakes.
  • Cost: Ages 3-5  $2/person

Gogol's The Diary of a Madman

  • When: February 13 - March 10
  • Where: Sedgwick Theater, 7137 Germantown Avenue, Philadelphia
  • Why Go: Part clown show, part social satire, part psychological tragedy, playwright David Holman adapts Gogol's short story into a masterful send up of bureaucracy and a raw account of one man’s descent into madness. Performances take place on Wednesdays and Thursdays at 7pm, Fridays and Saturdays at 8pm, and Sundays at 3pm.
  • Cost: Tickets are $30, $20 for seniors (65 and over), $15 for youth (25 and under). $10 industry and student rush tickets may be purchased at the box office one hour before the performance pending availability.
