On March 1, 2013, the Presbyterian Church of Chestnut Hill will present a reading of local playwright Michael Hollinger’s “Incorruptible.”

Michael Hollinger, a native of Lancaster, is a professor in the theater department at Villanova University and has had many of his plays debut at the Arden Theatre in Philadelphia.

“We’re very excited about this reading because Mr. Hollinger himself will be there that evening,” said Margaret R. Spencer, chair of the PCCH Music and Arts committee and director of the performance.  “He has very kindly agreed to make time for us to do a ‘talk-back’ with the cast and audience at the end of the show.  This will be an amazing opportunity for us theater lovers to find out about this particular play, the craft of playwriting in general, and perhaps even what Mr. Hollinger is working on now.”

Set in a 13th-century French monastery, this dark comedy blends farce, faith and philosophy as it tells the story of a down-at-heels abbey which is struggling to cope with a jaded local populace, a patron saint who no longer works miracles (or does she?), an upcoming visit from the Pope, and an industrious one-eyed minstrel named Jack.  When a nearby convent announces that they have the relics of Saint Foy – the same saint the monks have been venerating for decades – and that those relics are not only working all kinds of miracles but have also attracted the Pope’s attention, the monks devise a plan to put themselves back on the map and in the black.

The play is appropriate for all ages, but is probably most appealing to age 14 and older.  The reading will take place at the Presbyterian Church of Chestnut Hill, 8855 Germantown Avenue. Doors will open at 7:30 pm and the reading will start promptly at 8:00.  Light refreshments will be provided.  Admission is on a pay-what-you-will basis, and will cover the costs of performance.  All are welcome.
