Kehilla for Secular Jews of Greater Philadelphia to host Secular Jewish Scholar Bennett Muraskin

Bennett Muraskin, a noted Jewish scholar, author and long time activist in the Secular Jewish movement, will speak on The Tradition of Jewish Free Thought from Biblical Times to the Present, at a meeting sponsored by the Kehilla for Secular Jews of Greater Philadelphia on Sunday, March 13. The program, which is free and open to the public, begins at 2 p.m. at the Bala Cynwyd Library, North Highland Ave. and Old Lancaster Road, Bala Cynwyd.

Mr. Muraskin, a union representative for college professors in New Jersey, is the author of two books, Humanist Reading in Jewish Folklore and Let Justice Well Up Like Water: Progressive Jews from Hillel to Helen Susman. He contributes articles to Jewish Currents, Outlook (Canada) and Humanistic Judaism. He is currently working on a source book for Yiddish short stories in English translation.   

The Kehilla for Secular Jews of Greater Philadelphia (http://kehillaforsecularjews.org), includes the Sholom Aleichem Club (http://www.sholomaleichemclub.org),  Jewish Children’s Folkshul, (http://www.folkshul.org), which meets Sundays at Springside School, Jewish Children’s Folkshul Adult Community, Shir Shalom (http://www.shirshalom-philly.org),  Philadelphia Secular Jewish Organization, Workmen’s Circle/Arbeter Ring and South Jersey Secular Jews. They plan special programs for Passover, Rosh Hashonah and Yom Kippur. They “…are a cooperative venture of several of the Delaware Valley's Secular Jewish organizations…(We) are eclectic in our interests, passions, and focus. Yet we all share our strong identities as Jews and as Humanists.
