As a longtime (and even current!) gymnast, flipping for over 35 years, here's my take:

Round trampolines are less safe than rectangular ones. The physics of the shape of the bed works in such a way that, if you bounce awkwardly, you are more likely to bounce off the side of the trampoline to the ground (or into the netting if you have it). A rectangular trampoline's physics are such that you are more likely to bounce into the middle of the trampoline than off it. So it's disturbing to me that there are so many round trampolines out there being used at home where kids are not really supervised closely. Even with a rectangular bed, there are still a lot of risks to trampoline use, even in a supervised environment. I know experienced gymnasts who have been seriously hurt and even faced paralysis due to injuries doing even simple moves on the trampoline. I would never get a trampoline for our home, and fortunately our yard isn't suitable either. I'll let my kids jump to their hearts' content while being supervised during their gymnastics classes.

Thirty seconds of any episode of tosh.0 is the reason I've completely banned my child from home trampolines. Alarmist? Maybe, but I'd rather not have to comfort a child whose shin bone is coming through her leg.

You may want to check in with your homeowner insurance company to see if they will even cover a trampoline in the event someone gets hurt. Most don't cover or will exclude the coverage.
