The Best Places To Volunteer Nearby This Holiday Season

Bikes, the arts and more.

Here's a list of a few different places in Mt. Airy and beyond to volunteer this holiday season:

- The Friends of the Wissahickon always have a variety of volunteer opportunities available. Recently, workers have helped to clean up the park after Hurricane Irene, and you can tell the difference they've made. They also work as ambassadors of sorts and do a variety of other work. For more information, click here.

- The Neighborhood Interfaith Movement offers different opportunities as well. On its website, it offers volunteer ombudsman positions. NIM also does work with children and with different communities of faith; if that sounds like something you might be interested in, click here.

- Allens Lane Art Center is a perfect venue for volunteers looking to learn more about both the world of art and the surrounding community. The center is on the lookout for anyone interested in helping usher during theatre performances, working as an attendant to keep the gallery open to the public, painting and refurbishing the art space as needed, or performing general administration tasks in the office. Stay out of the cold and promote your local gallery at the same time. Visit here to fill out a volunteer application today.

- Parent-teacher organizations and Home & School associations at Mt. Airy schools (or at schools that draw Mt. Airy students) are often looking for people to help out. The Mt. Airy neighborhood schools are Day, Emlen, Germantown High, Henry, Houston and Lingelbach. You can contact the schools directly for more information about ways you can get involved.

- Are you an area cyclist who's undiscouraged by the chill of winter? Then come share your road and wheels knowledge with interested bikers at the Mt. Airy Bike Collective. This volunteer group of biking enthusiasts has been meeting at Mt. Airy Presbyterian Church after moving from a space at 542 Carpenter Lane. Volunteers share tools and cycling experience to promote the safe practice of this green mode of transportation. Call 215-70B-IKE0 or e-mail MtAiryBikeCollective@gmail.com for details.
