Summer Construction Continues Throughout the Neighborhood

Some roads are closed. Parking is prohibited on others.

Construction has made it a little harder to travel through parts of Mt. Airy lately.

Portions of West Allens Lane have been closed to cars for a good portion of the past three weeks. Allens Lane is closed today just east of Cresheim Road as Philadelphia Gas Works continues its regular maintenance of gas lines along the road.

Work ends each day at 4 p.m., according to PGW spokeswoman Melanie McCottry.

"Basically, what that is is safety prevention to make sure everything under the ground is in good condition," McCottry said.

Streetscape work is also being done along Germantown Avenue today. Parking is prohibited on a portion of the road south of Sedgwick Street.

The streetscape work is part of a larger, Mt. Airy USA project along the avenue and has continued throughout the summer.

A portion of the eastbound side of Carpenter Lane just east of Lincoln Drive was also closed earlier today for work, but cars were permitted to pass going both directions.

As a West Allens lane resident, I think it would be nice if the city would inform us in advance of their doing street work. I often come home to red markings on my property and have no idea what they are and where thy come from, A little courtesy or more transparency would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, I agree with you Cherly Lee-Owens. The Devon project is still being worked on and now it's been over five years. I was there a couple weeks ago and a huge truck carrying construction supplies was blocking the entire street . He said they were doing everything over agan. Also It would have been nice and legal to inform the neighbors about the contaminated soil they removed in secret, especially after the the haz mat sent one neighbor to hospital several times and doctors were asking questions which no one would answer. Hiding environmental public health hazards is a crime. One photo of numerous violations added.
