Signups For MLK Day Projects Begin
Martin Luther King Day is Jan. 16 this year.
It may be sort of hard to believe, but volunteers are currently being sought for the Greater Martin Luther King Day of Service.
This is the 17th annual iteration of the day. It's presided over by Mt. Airy resident Todd Bernstein.
“What started seventeen years ago as a local project has become a growing nationwide movement of celebrating Dr. King’s legacy by uniting people of all backgrounds and ages and turning pressing community concerns into ongoing citizen action,” said Bernstein, who is the president of Global Citizen and the day's founder.
There are a variety of projects going on in Mt. Airy. Among them:
- Mt. Airy USA is having its day of service at Anna B. Day School from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. It's also being organized by the Trolley Car Diner. Neighborhood groups, like East Mt. Airy Neighbors, will attend.
- The Unitarian Society of Germantown (6511 Lincoln Dr.) is coordinating a group that will volunteer at the Wissahickon Boys & Girls Club. It's also organizing a variety of other opportunities, such as a winter coat drive and work for the Northwest Philadelphia Interfaith Hospitality Network.
- St. Michael's Lutheran Church will clean up the area behind its church property.
- InFusion Coffee & Tea will host a book drive for Philadelphia Reads inside its store.
