Police, PennDOT to Target Drunken Drivers

The “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” initiative is set to run through July 8.

The following information comes from a release from the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation.

State and local police, along with PennDOT, will take part in a national enforcement effort through July 8 targeting motorists who drive under the influence.

The “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” enforcement effort will focus on keeping Pennsylvania’s roads safe during the Independence Day travel period.

“Many people will celebrate and travel for the Independence Day holiday,” PennDOT Secretary Barry J. Schoch said in a release. “Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs puts your life and the lives of those around you in danger.”

“Motorists must understand that alcohol and driving never mix,” said State Police Commissioner Frank Noonan said in a statement. “Don't get behind the wheel of a vehicle if you've been drinking, even if you plan to only drive a short distance”

The legal blood-alcohol content in Pennsylvania is 0.08 for motorists over the age of 21. For underage drivers, the blood-alcohol limit is 0.02 percent. DUI penalties can include jail time, license suspension and fines of between $500 and $5,000.

I can't say the alphabet backwards when I'm sober :) Glad they're out in force to get the drunks off the roads!

I'm always nervous driving on a holiday because I know I'm sober but no one else is. Is it really hard for one person among friends to NOT drink alcohol?!?!?! If it is then stay the night wherever you are. Don't endanger my life and the lives of the responsible people that actually benefit our society. The drunk driver never dies, they just destroy the lives of others then cost taxpayers money while they sit in jail awhile. The family of the victim will mourn forever. All that for a 4th drink?!?!?!
