Numerous Tax-Delinquent Properties in Mt. Airy
There were over 1,300 throughout the neighborhood as of last April.
There are lots of tax-delinquent properties in Mt. Airy, but not many of them have been that way for more than 30 years.
The Inquirer has published a map of such properties that details statistics through April 2011. Here are some stats from the map:
- East Mt. Airy has 964 delinquent properties, while West Mt. Airy has 425.
- Taxes owed on West Mt. Airy properties total about $2.5 million, while those on East Mt. Airy exceed $5.5 million.
- In each neighborhood, the average amount of taxes owed on each property totals about $5,800.
There aren't many properties that have been delinquent for decades. There's one property on Greene Street near Upsal Street that has been that way for 30 to 40 years, and there are others that fit into that category on Sprague Street (near East Mt. Airy Avenue), on East Sharpnack Street (near Germantown Avenue) and on East Hortter Street (near Chew Avenue).

Silly me. I didn't realize paying property taxes is optional. Amongst the many near-neighbors who are in arrears, I see one in particular whose annual tax bill is not only appreciably lower than most in the area but it hasn't been paid since 1996! I feel like a real sucker now.
