New Traffic Light Coming to Emlen Street (Update: It's Not Coming)
The light will be placed at Emlen and West Mt. Airy Avenue.
Update, May 17, 1:30 p.m. It turns out the traffic light isn't coming here after all. You can read this story to learn more.
The original post, which tells a story that's no longer true, is below.
Original post:
A new traffic light will soon come to Emlen Street at West Mt. Airy Avenue.
A West Mt. Airy Neighbors newsletter made the announcement last week.
A stop sign was placed there several months ago in response to a water main project on Allens Lane that dumped more traffic onto West Mt. Airy and Emlen.
Cars used to speed down Emlen Street before the stop sign was in place. Now, the traffic light is intended to deter them from doing so even more.
WMAN Vice President for Community Affairs Michelle Brown-Nevers succeeded in getting a traffic engineering study done for the site.
It was because of that study that the light will be installed.
What do you think about the traffic light installation? Tell us in the comments.

This is great! My mother got into a bad accident at that corner, some years ago, and when I lived right there it was always seemed like an unsafe intersection. I have welcomed the recent addition of the 4-way stop, and think taking an extra minute to get to Lincoln Drive is just fine when it means more safety for pedestrians, bikes and cars.

I think it is a disaster. Three traffic lights in three blocks is too many. It will be an eyesore and traffic will be backed up all along emlen. I do not see the need for it at all.

Will the new light be timed to form a mini-green wave with the two that are mere blocks away? If not, this could only serve to create more traffic congestion in our neighborhood. How would this traffic light make for greater safety than the four- way stop sign that is already in place? Indeed, it might prove to be less safe, what with motorists running the light, especially at rush hour.

Great, safer, hopefully slow down those speed demons. If there is a bit of a back up, it is a small price to pay for safety. It's the easiest thing to find fault with something, too bad for the naysayers. I live in the immediate area & all that traffc on Emlen Street is just part of the deal for living in that section of Mt Airy. Hopefully this will cut down on all the accidents t that intersection.

Having a stop light doesn't necessarily slow drivers down. Sometimes it's just the opposite. Some folks follow this interpretation of the signals: Green = Go; Yellow = Go Faster. When there were traffic lights along Chew from Gorgas to Mt. Pleasant, I'd sit on my porch a hundred or so feet from the intersection and watch this play out time after time, occasionally with disastrous results. Since the lights were replaced with four-way stop signs, the number of serious accidents has decreased. Of course, the same idiots who tried to beat the light now try to slip through the stop sign without actually stopping, but they are rolling through the intersection at 5 or 10 mph instead of 30mph+.
