Mt. Airy Teachers Fund Gives Out $7,000 in Grants
The fund emphasizes an anti-bullying message.
The Mt. Airy Teachers Fund has awarded $7,000 in grants to teachers at various neighborhood public schools.
Grants ranged in size from $100 to $500 each and were judged based on educational opportunities provided by the teachers to their students.
Nearly half of this year’s grant funds were distributed to teachers who incorporated a pro-tolerance/anti-bullying message into their proposed projects.
This is the fourth year the fund has given out money.
The fund emphasizes an anti-bullying message.
Peter Yarrow of the folk group Peter, Paul and Mary staged a 2007 concert fundraiser at the home of Judy and Ken Weinstein which raised more than $10,000.
Weinstein is the driving force behind the fund.
"This year, the committee wanted to continue the goal of spreading Peter Yarrow's message of anti-bullying," Weinstein said. "We are very excited to award so many teachers who believe in this message as much as we do."
One of the grants will pay for a recording studio for the entire music program at the Houston School. Other students will have the opportunity to visit the Franklin Institute for an Earth exhibit.
Teachers from Day, Emlen, Henry, Houston, and Lingelbach schools received the grants.
