Mt. Airy Bus Fire Sends 2 Students to Hospital

Students were from John F. McCloskey Elementary School and Franklin Edmonds School.

Two elementary school students were hospitalized Monday following a minor school bus fire in Mt. Airy.

A School District of Philadelphia spokesperson said a bus caught fire on the the 7100 block of Germantown Avenue in Mt. Airy around 3:30 p.m.

Eight students plus a driver were traveling in Mt. Airy when the bus caught fire,  spokesperson Deirdre Darragh said. The students were from John F. McCloskey Elementary School and Franklin Edmonds School, which are both located in Cedarbrook.

All students and the driver exited the vehicle, she said. Two students were taken to a hospital for precautionary reasons. The schools the students were from weren't specified.

A chief transportation official arrived on site to coordinate the students getting home, she said.

Darragh said there wasn't an immediate known cause of the fire, but said a mechanical problem was suspected.
