How Many People Live in Your Mt. Airy Neighborhood, and What is its Racial and Ethnic Makeup?

Data, courtesy the New York Times from the U.S. Census Bureau's American Community Survey from 2005 to 2009, gives us a sense of the makeup of Mt. Airy's population.

 

The New York Times has come out with a map that documents the distribution of racial and ethnic groups across America in each U.S. Census tract. The information was gleaned from the Census Bureau's American Community Survey from 2005 to 2009, according to the Times, and the numbers "are best regarded as estimates," the Times says.

Below is the population information for Mt. Airy, based on the survey, as well as data on the makeup of racial and ethnic groups within various Mt. Airy communities. 

Census tract 235 (bordered by Wissahickon Avenue to the east, the Wissahickon Valley to the west, Allens Lane to the north and Walnut Lane to the south):
- Population: 981
- Whites: 72 percent
- Blacks: 21 percent
- Hispanics: 7 percent.

Census tract 234 (bordered by McCallum Street to the east, Wissahickon Avenue to the west, St. George's Road to the north and Sedgwick Street/Ellet Street to the south):
- Population: 527
- Whites: 92 percent
- Blacks: 6 percent
- Hispanics: 2 percent.

Census tract 236 (bordered by Greene Street/Lincoln Drive to the east, Wissahickon Avenue to the west, Ellet Street/Sedgwick Street to the north and Johnson Street to the south):
- Population: 2,957
- Whites: 57 percent
- Blacks: 38 percent
- Hispanics: 3 percent
- Asians: 1 percent
- Other groups: 1 percent.

Census tract 237 (bordered by Germantown Avenue to the east, Lincoln Drive/Greene Street to the west, Sedgwick Street/Mt. Pleasant Avenue to the north and Johnson Street to the south):
- Population: 4,593
- Whites: 41 percent
- Blacks: 55 percent
- Hispanics: 2 percent
- Asians: 2 percent
- Other groups: 1 percent.

Census tract 233 (bordered by Germantown Avenue to the east, McCallum Street to the west, Allens Lane to the north and Sedgwick Street/Mt. Pleasant Avenue to the south):
- Population: 2,939
- Whites: 59 percent
- Blacks: 29 percent
- Hispanics: 6 percent
- Asians: 4 percent
- Other groups: 2 percent.

Census tract 232 (bordered by Germantown Avenue to the east, a portion of McCallum Street to the west, Emlen Street/Cresheim Valley Drive to the north/west and Allens Lane to the south):
- Population: 660
- Whites: 73 percent
- Blacks: 25 percent
- Hispanics: 2 percent.

Census tract 256 (bordered by Stenton Avenue to the east, Germantown Avenue to the west, Cresheim Valley Drive to the north and Mt. Airy Avenue to the south):
- Population: 2,458
- Whites: 56 percent
- Blacks: 34 percent
- Hispanics: 5 percent
- Asians: 1 percent
- Other groups: 4 percent.

Census tract 255 (bordered by Stenton Avenue to the east, Germantown Avenue to the west, Mt. Airy Avenue to the north and Gorgas Lane to the south):
- Population: 2,425
- Whites: 30 percent
- Blacks: 64 percent
- Hispanics: 2 percent
- Other groups: 3 percent.

Census tract 253 (bordered by Boyer Avenue to the east, Germantown Avenue to the west, Gorgas Lane to the north and Upsal Street to the south):
- Population: 3,500
- Whites: 9 percent
- Blacks: 90 percent
- Hispanics: 1 percent
- Other groups: 1 percent.

Census tract 254 (bordered by Stenton Avenue to the east, Boyer Avenue to the west, Gorgas Lane to the north and Cliveden Street to the south):
- Population: 3,471
- Whites: 12 percent
- Blacks: 81 percent
- Hispanics: 4 percent
- Other groups: 3 percent.

Census tract 251 (bordered by Stenton Avenue to the east, Chew Avenue to the west, Cliveden Street/Upsal Street to the north and Washington Lane to the south):
- Population: 1,814
- Whites: 1 percent
- Blacks: 97 percent
- Asians: 1 percent
- Other groups: 1 percent.

Census tract 252 (bordered by Chew Avenue/Belfield Avenue to the east, Germantown Avenue to the west, Upsal Street to the north and High Street to the south):
- Population: 7,752
- Whites: 10 percent
- Blacks: 87 percent
- Hispanics: 1 percent
- Other groups: 2 percent.

The areas listed above have a total approximate population of 34,077 (though some areas included in census tract 232 are in Chestnut Hill and some areas included in census tract 252 are in Germantown).

I love Mt. Airy. It is very comfortable for me. I'm glad to have been born and raised here. And lucky to have lived on the west coast for 6 years to be able to appreciate my home town.
