C.W. Henry a Top Feeder For Masterman
The school had 11 students admitted to the school over the past three years.
It's clear that Julia R. Masterman Laboratory and Demonstration School is considered one of the top public schools in the city.
A recent Philadelphia Public School Notebook piece looks at how the school admits its students, and comes to the conclusion that, generally, those interested need to come in fifth grade. It's very difficult to get in at the beginning of high school.
One of Masterman's top feeder schools is in Mt. Airy. C.W. Henry School had 11 students admitted to its fifth grade from 2009 to 2011. That's in comparison to Meredith Elementary and Penn Alexander Elementary, which sent 24 and 22 students to the school's fifth grade, respectively, over the course of that time period.
The school's principal, Marjorie Neff, said this:
“In many of those schools, you have a parent population who knows how the system works and how to work the system."

4/5 of all Masterman 5th graders admitted come from public schools and two of the top feeders--CW Henry and Cook-Wissahickon--are right here in Northwest Philadelphia! Well, it's nice to see real numbers behind something we often hear. I would be interested in seeing the official numbers for spots offered (as opposed to admissions) since it's my understanding that there are spots offered to children who end up declining and attending other schools. I would guess that there's not a ton of these, but it does happen and I'd be interested in seeing how many.

I went to Masterman for all eight years, and I knew a lot of students that came from Henry. A lot of students knew each other since kindergarten. I wonder if that makes the transition to a new school easier?
