Are Superintendent Finalists the Right Men For the Job?
Pedro Martinez and William Hite Jr. were named this week.
It appears as if the School District of Philadelphia's list of potential superintendents is down to two.
Pedro Martinez and William Hite Jr. were named finalists for the job late last week. Martinez will meet with parents and members of the public at 440 N. Broad St. Monday at 6:30 p.m., while Hite will do the same Tuesday (same place, same time).
Martinez is a deputy superintendent in Clark County in Nevada, while Hite is the superintendent in the Prince George's County school district in Maryland.
Are these two choices good ones, in your mind? Or do you think better ones exist? Vote and let us know in the comments below.

This is ridiculous. How can anyone vote on this nothing story?

You're right, not enough to this story to vote; however, if you've been reading the Inquirer and Daily News, you'd know a little more about the candidates. Perhaps after the meetings people will know more about the candidates to place their vote. After what I have read I don't need to hear them speak, neither is what we asked for in a candidate.

This piece should give you a better sense, hopefully. http://www.philly.com/philly/education/20120625_Sizing_up_two_likely_schools_chief_candidates.html

So Philly has a choice between 2 Broad Toadies. If Hite is doing such good stuff in his current job then why would he leave before he's done? This is part of the Broad lemon dance of corporate reform. What kind of merit pay is he for, as defined by what, and where will the money for that come from if the district is so badly in the hole? Not to mention that merit pay (as tied to student test scores) has never been a success in any of the places it has been tried. How will Hite justify spending more money on the failed concept of test based teacher evaluations for his "merit pay" scheme when the district is in the hole? How will charter schools save the city money when the charter management companies need to take their cut to fund their parallel bureaucracy? Sounds like Philly is screwed again.
