Searching for history in the soils surrounding Lovett Library, a one day archeology investigation.
Come join us, participate and learn. There will be a brief historical overview of events involving the area.
The Free Library, in conjunction with MountAiryUSA, is developing plans for Lovett Park, next to Lovett Memorial Library. Because we think the area has not been disturbed by any building, we felt that this was an opportunity to try to find if there is any history of the area buried in the soil. Thus the Friends sponsored a survey of the Lovett Park by ground penetrating radar (GPR). Results of the GPR survey indicate that the soil about 18 inches below the surface showed some disturbance. The Library administration has given us the approval to do exploratory investigations in two areas by digging down two feet in four feet by four feet test sites.
We have selected Saturday, November 17 for the activity, with Sunday, November 18 as a back-up rain date.
There are basically five activities required to perform the investigation:
Digging the soil from the square layer by layer.
Sifting the soil to find any possible artifacts.
Bagging and labeling any found objects.
Recording the information.
Photographing the activity.
The plan is to have two working sessions, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. Thus, for each of these sessions we need the help of ten youngsters, between 11 and 14 years old, to perform these activities in the two sites. There will be adult supervision during the dig.
Plans are to start at 9:00 AM with an orientation and explanation of the tasks for the two digs. The two digs will be completed by the second group, which will start about 12:30 PM. Expectation is that the two digs will be finished by about 3:00 PM. Lunch will be provided.
If you have anyone interested in participating, have them respond with an email to <friendsoflovett@hotmail.com>. Have them include a short statement of interest, with school attended, which session for attendance, and any preference for one of the required activities. After youngsters are selected from a review of the received emails, confirmations will be sent back by email.
Thanks for your interest! Based on the results of these exploratory investigations, it may be that a more extensive one may be done in the future, if funding can be arranged.

Does Patch even proofread headlines? This is embarrassing.
